We had a good passage from New-York to Bordeaux. Many passengers were rather afraid and slept on deck with their safety belts when we neared Europe As for ourselves we enjoyed the trip and had nothing to complain of except the food which was uneatable.
Renoir is now in Paris and I see him every day. His wife died suddenly at the end of June and was buried at Nice. She was 56. - That death has affected Renoir, who was very weak when he came here. He is now better and hopes to start work shortly. His youngest son, Claude, is with him. Pierre and Jean are both in military hospitals in Paris. Pierre has lost forever the use of his right arm which is kept in a sling. Part of the bone is gone. Jean had a bad wound in the upper thigh; the bone was shattered and his leg will remain shorter than the other. The wound is not yet healed.
Paris is filled with wounded soldiers and all French- women are attending them. [continued on next Document]
